Austin Generator Service was founded by Don and Gwen Summers, (then called Austin Welder and Generator Service), in 1978. We have a long history in Austin and Central Texas of being the best in backup power. Austin Generator Service was founded on timeless principals of reliability and quality customer service…and more than 45 years later, that hasn’t changed! We exist to give our customers control and peace of mind in a world of disruptions by providing reliable backup power solutions with world-class customer service.

Our History

Austin Welder & Generator Service opens for Business, focusing on service and repair for welding machines and small generators in a small shop off of north Hwy 183 in Austin.
1978
AWGS moves to a newer, larger location on Howard lane, after establishing itself as the premier provider of repairs for small generators and welding machines.
1985
Significant changes come in the industry and the company shifts from service and selling smaller products to a new focus on large, emergency standby generator systems, discontinuing repairs of welding machines, and rebrands to Austin Generator Service.
1993
The owner of a national load bank rental company meets with Don and Kurt to discuss the possibility of representing their company in Texas. And so begins our load bank rental business.
1999
Don Summers retires and transfers ownership to his son Kurt, who is still currently President and CEO.
2002
The load bank rental side of the company has grown so much over the past few years, that a new company, under the umbrella of Austin Generator Service, is formed: Load Banks of America.
2007
After rapid growth over the course of a decade, Load Banks of America sells to a national competitor, as the market continues to saturate, allowing Kurt and the team to focus all its energy back on the core of the business, backup generators.
2016
The Covid pandemic forces many people to stay home for an extended amount of time, and also instills uncertainty for our infrastructure, which leads thousands of people to seek out backup power solutions for personal protection, should something happen to the grid. The team starts to grow exponentially as the residential market booms.
2020
“Snowmageddon” sweeps across Texas and the nation, knocking out power for people for days or weeks. This is yet another event that continues to drive growth for the residential business side of AGS, as people realize they are unprepared for being without power for an extended amount of time. The team continues to grow to meet the demand.
2021
We are grateful for the many years we have been able to help give people control and peace of mind, and we look forward to many years to come! We hope to always be your one-stop-shop for all your backup power needs.
